The Arizona Coyotes on Thursday hired former Buffalo Sabres general manager Darcy Regier to serve as senior vice president and assistant general manager.

"We are very pleased Darcy has decided to join us in Arizona," Coyotes GM Don Maloney said. "Darcy adds intelligence and experience to our management team. The wealth of knowledge he has garnered as a long-time general manager in the National Hockey League is invaluable to us. He is a great addition to our staff."

The Coyotes had an opening after former assistant GM Brad Treliving was hired as general manager of the Calgary Flames.

Regier spent the previous 17 seasons as GM of the Sabres, a run that ended when he was fired Nov. 13.

During Regier's tenure in Buffalo, the Sabres went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1999 and made four trips to the Eastern Conference Final.
