PHILADELPHIA - Sam Bennett couldn't do a pull-up at the NHL scouting combine, but that didn't prevent him from being the Calgary Flames' fourth overall pick in the draft.

Bennett, ranked as the top North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, becomes a centre for the Flames to build around.

He's the first pick of new general manager Brad Treliving as Calgary continues its retooling effort.

Bennett, a native of Holland Landing, Ont., had 91 points this past season for the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs, where he played for ex-Flames centre Doug Gilmour.

The six-foot 178-pounder was named OHL player of the year this past season.

He's seen as a high-energy player with skills in all areas of the ice.
