The Edmonton Oilers have called a news conference for Friday at which they are expected to introduce Bob Nicholson as a team executive, TSN reported Thursday.

For the past 16 years, Nicholson was president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada; he stepped down May 31.

TSN earlier this week reported Nicholson, 61, was going to be hired by an NHL team in a position above president but below owner.

"There will be NHL opportunities, other hockey opportunities internationally," he told The Globe and Mail in May. "I want to do something I think I can succeed at. I didn't step out because I had an offer; I stepped out because it was time."

According to The Canadian Press, Canada won 44 gold medals at world championships, Olympics and World Cups under Nicholson. That includes the gold medal in men's and women's hockey at the past two Olympics.
