NEW YORK -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik did not play after the first period against the New York Rangers in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Second Round series at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh won 4-2 and leads the best-of-7 series 3-1 with Game 5 on Friday at Consol Energy Center (7 p.m. ET; CBC, RDS, NBCSN).

Orpik's absence reduced Pittsburgh to five defensemen. Paul Martin played 30:05, and Kris Letang played 27:56.

Orpik was making his first appearance in six games after sustaining an undisclosed injury in the Eastern Conference First Round series against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played nine shifts in the first period, but the last one lasted seven seconds, ending at 18:23.
