Daily Primer Jan. 22: Blackhawks, Red Wings face off

The Detroit Red Wings changed conferences this season and thus haven’t faced the Chicago Blackhawks since last spring, but the Original Six teams are finally set to share the same ice Wednesday night.

The Red Wings host the Blackhawks at Joe Louis Arena (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN2) in the first showdown featuring these teams since Chicago rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate Detroit in the second round of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, culminating with Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal in Game 7.

Here’s a closer look at the action Wednesday:

Carolina Hurricanes at Philadelphia Flyers -- Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the game was postponed due to a snowstorm that slammed the Northeast. Because of that, the Hurricanes' scheduled home game against the Ottawa Senators on Friday night has been moved to Saturday at noon ET. The game scheduled for Friday had to be moved due to an NHL rule preventing teams from playing games on three consecutive days. The Hurricanes are also scheduled to face the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center on Thursday. Philadelphia announced that fans with tickets for the game Tuesday will be admitted Wednesday.

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins -- It’s been an up-and-down start to 2014 for the Canadiens, who have yet to win or lose back-to-back games in the New Year. Gritty forward Max Pacioretty has a four-game point streak, but it hasn’t been enough to help Montreal string together some victories. The Canadiens conclude their three-game road trip Friday against the Detroit Red Wings. Pittsburgh had its 13-game home winning streak snapped Monday when it suffered a 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. It was their fourth loss at Consol Energy Center this season. Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen has recorded a point in four straight games and 11 of his past 14.

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings -- They may now play in different conferences, but it won’t take long for this rivalry to pick up where it left off last postseason, when the Blackhawks rallied from a 3-1 series deficit and beat the Red Wings in seven games, capped by Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal. Chicago sits atop the Central Division with 75 points and forward Marian Hossa has five goals and two assists during a five-game point streak. Detroit, which is coming off a 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Monday, added No. 1 goalie Jimmy Howard to an already-packed injured list that includes key players such as Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Johan Franzen (upper body) and Daniel Alfredsson (back).

Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames -- Phoenix opens a three-game road trip after winning twice on its three-game homestand. Those are the Coyotes' only two wins in their past seven games; they’ve scored 12 goals over that span. Flames captain Mark Giordano has two goals and two assists during a four-game point streak, but Calgary is winless in its past four games (0-3-1). The Flames are hoping forward Mike Cammalleri, who has missed five games with a concussion, will resume skating this week.
