BUFFALO, N.Y. - A person familiar with Buffalo Sabres' general manager search has told The Associated Press that the team has hired Ottawa Senators assistant GM Tim Murray to take over the job.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Tuesday because the Sabres have not revealed who they will announce at a news conference later in the day.

Murray spent the past seven seasons working for the Senators, and has 20 years of NHL experience after breaking in as a scout with Detroit in 1993. He is the nephew of Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who has mentored him throughout his career.

Murray emerged as one of four finalists for the job in newly hired Sabres president Pat LaFontaine's two-month search process to replace Darcy Regier, who was fired in November.
