San Jose Sharks rookie forward Tomas Hertl will be unable to play for the Czech Republic team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics due to a right knee injury, according to comments from Czech Olympic coach Alois Hadamczik to ISport.cz.

Hertl will have surgery on his knee next week. Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said he expects Hertl will be sidelined for more than a month and would have a more definitive timetable after the surgery.

"The swelling is pretty extensive still," Wilson told reporters Monday. "We'll know more hopefully in the next week or so. The projection is probably a minimum of a month right now ... but we are prepared that it could be longer."

Hertl was injured Thursday in the first period against the Los Angeles Kings during a knee-on-knee collision with Kings captain Dustin Brown at Staples Center.

Hertl leads all rookies with 15 goals and 25 points this season.
