The Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday signed forward Jerred Smithson to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Smithson had been with the Maple Leafs' American Hockey League team, the Toronto Marlies, on a professional tryout contract he signed Oct. 16. In seven AHL games, Smithson had one goal and eight penalty minutes.

The 34-year-old center split last season between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers, and in 45 games he had three goals, three assists and won 55.4 percent of his faceoffs, ranking him 13th in the League.

In 10 NHL seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, Panthers and Oilers, Smithson has 39 goals and 96 points in 588 games.

To make room on the roster, the Maple Leafs sent forward Trevor Smith to the AHL.
