Cam Ward was placed on injured reserve by the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday due to a lower-body injury sustained in the team's game Thursday against the Minnesota Wild. He's expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
It's the second straight season Ward has sustained a serious injury; he missed the final six weeks of last season due to a knee injury.
Ward was injured Thursday when he stretched to make a save on Minnesota's Mikael Granlund 4:07 into the first period of a scoreless game. Play continued for about 15 seconds when a whistle stopped play and Ward was able to skate to the bench and down the tunnel to the Carolina dressing room.
Justin Peters entered the game and allowed goals on the first two shots he faced but rallied to make 19 straight saves in what ended as a 3-1 loss for the Hurricanes.
With regular backup Anton Khudobin also out with a lower-body injury, the Hurricanes will go with Peters and Mike Murphy, who was recalled Friday from the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
Murphy, 24, has two games of NHL experience, with the Hurricanes in 2011-12, playing a total of 36 minutes and stopping all nine shots he faced. In three AHL games this season, he's 1-2-0 with a 3.81 goals-against average.
