MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jason Jaffray's third goal of the season proved to be the game-winner as the St. John's IceCaps held off the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 in American Hockey League action on Friday night.
Linden Very and Nick Deslauriers scored for the Monarchs (5-1-3), who lost their first game in regulation time this season.
St. John's goaltender Eddie Pasquale made 25 saves while his counterpart in Manchester's net, Martin Jones, stopped 28 shots.
Very opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at 4:09 of the first period, but the IceCaps (3-3-1) responded 39 seconds later with Klingberg's first of the year. Gordon broke the tie with a power-play goal six minutes later.
Jaffray scored at 9:20 of the second period to make it a 3-1 game for the visitors.
Deslauriers put the game within one with his third goal of the season at 15:43 of the third period, but the comeback attempt stopped there.
St. John's was 1-for-4 with the man advantage while Manchester was blanked on two power-play chances.
