Toronto Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk took part in the first half of practice Wednesday and his status remains up in the air for the game Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle wouldn't rule out the possibility of van Riemsdyk returning to the lineup after he was scratched for the win Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild with an upper-body injury.

"Again, there's improvement but we'll see if he’s available to us for [Thursday] night," Carlyle told reporters. "Hopefully with another 24 hours and a couple treatments he'll be back."

Van Riemsdyk has five goals in six games for the Maple Leafs, who lead the Atlantic Division with six wins in their first seven games.
