New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan doesn't expect to play in the team's season opener against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday. Although Callahan told ESPNNewYork.com his surgically repaired left shoulder "felt great" and "responded well" to contact in Tuesday's practice, he added that he believes "Thursday's a no-go."

Callahan underwent surgery in the summer to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He took part in contract drills Tuesday despite wearing a yellow non-contact jersey, which he told reporters was only for drills and that there was no setback in his rehab.

"Full contact. Same as always," Callahan said.

Callahan had hoped to be ready by Thursday, but Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said last weekend that his 28-year-old winger was unlikely to play in Phoenix. There remains hope that Callahan will be a go next Monday against the Los Angeles Kings.
