Hurricanes re-sign Jared Staal to one-year deal

The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday signed right wing Jared Staal to a one-year, two-way contract. According to the team's website, the deal will pay the youngest of the four Staal brothers $550,000 if he plays in the NHL and $60,000 if he's in the American Hockey League during the 2013-14 season.

Staal, 22, appeared in two games two games with the Hurricanes during the 2012-13 season. In 52 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League, he established career-highs with four goals, three assists, seven points and 25 penalty minutes.

Staal, selected in the second round (No. 49) of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes, made his NHL debut on April 25 against the New York Rangers, starting the game on the same line with two of his older brothers, Eric and Jordan. It marked the fourth time in NHL history that a trio of brothers played for the same team during the same season, and the first since Peter, Anton and Marian Stastny played for the Quebec Nordiques in 1985.

Staal was acquired by the Hurricanes on May 13, 2010, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 Draft.
