BOSTON -- As a player, Cam Neely became a Boston Bruins legend while scoring 344 goals in 525 games with the team. As the Bruins' president, he helped assemble the squad that captured the Stanley Cup in 2011 and is tied 2-2 with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.
But to many lovers of the Farrelly brothers' comedies, the Hockey Hall of Fame member always will be known as Seabass.
He earned that distinction being cast as the thuggish character in the Farrellys' 1995 film, "Dumb and Dumber." It was the brothers' lifelong fandom for the Bruins that inspired them to cast Neely in the role. Now that he's running a winning Bruins team, they couldn't be happier.
"Whenever someone talks about 'Dumb and Dumber,' they always ask about Seabass," Bobby Farrelly told NHL.com. "We didn't realize it would be such a big character. It's been a great team to root for over the years, between the Bobby Orrs and the Derek Sandersons and the Cam Neelys. This has been a very exciting NHL season, and the playoffs are unbelievable."
The Rhode Island native said he's thrilled about the team Neely has helped build -- and he's even more thrilled his good friend has been among its architects.
"This is a team where you don't really want to isolate anyone and say, 'This guy is unbelievable.' This team is a team," Farrelly said. "I just go back to my buddy Cam Neely and I give him credit for that. The team has a lot of good guys. You can say [Zdeno] Chara is the best defenseman in the League. Tuukka [Rask] is standing on his head. [Brad] Marchand is an agitator. [David] Krejci doesn't get a lot of credit. All great players."
While attending Game 4 Wednesday at TD Garden, Farrelly couldn't help but address the subject of Neely's on-screen persona. Now that he and his brother Peter are in the process of producing a "Dumb and Dumber" sequel, the Seabass talk has ramped up -- with a very special Bruins player looking to make a cameo.
"We had a guy come up to us this year. He said, 'Listen, I heard you're going to do a sequel to 'Dumb and Dumber.' I want to be son of Seabass.' That was Milan Lucic," Farrelly said. "I looked at him and thought, 'You know what? That's not a bad idea.' Because he looks a lot like Cam, plays a lot like Cam. I've got to convince my brother. We need to figure out a way to make it work."
In the meantime, Farrelly admits it's pretty weird Seabass is running the Bruins, "but in a good way."
