The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed left wing Retu Suri, one of the heroes of Switzerland's run at the 2013 IIHF World Championship, to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced Thursday.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, the contract won't kick in until the 2014-15 season because Suri wants to play one more season in Switzerland.
"We're comfortable with that," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman told Tampabay.com on Thursday.
The 24-year-old had five goals and eight points in 10 games when the Swiss won the silver medal at the World Championship. He scored twice in a shootout to give Switzerland a 3-2 preliminary-round win against Canada, a team managed by Yzerman.
"He's a good skater and a smart player," Yzerman said. "He's got good skills and good hands and we like him because he's a very responsible player. He's got good size (6-foot, 185 pounds). He's strong. He checks well. For us, he complements some of the younger prospects we have coming. He's something we can really use."
Suri totaled 14 goals and 25 points in 46 games last season for Zug.
