The Calgary Flames have signed goaltender Joey MacDonald to a one-year contract extension. The one-way deal carries a base salary of $925,000.

The 33-year-old was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings in 2001 and was claimed off waivers by the Flames on Feb. 11 after stints with the Red Wings, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks.

MacDonald, a native of Pictou, Nova Scotia, has played 18 games this year with Calgary, recording a 7-7-1 record, a 2.91 GAA and a .900 save percentage. He has a career record of 38-55-0-14 with a .903 save percentage and 3.02 GAA.

With longtime starter Miikka Kiprusoff not confirmed to return to Calgary next season, MacDonald could be thrust into the starter's role. He has appeared in eight of the Flames' past 13 games, starting six. During a recent stretch in which he started four of five games for the Flames, he went 3-1-0 with a 2.00 save percentage.
