QMJHL Roundup: Mooseheads take commanding 3-0 lead in series against Sea Dogs

The Halifax Mooseheads are in control of their QMJHL first-round series against Saint John.

Stephen MacAulay and Jonathan Drouin each had two goals as the Mooseheads took a 6-1 decision in Game 3 against the Sea Dogs on Tuesday.

Andrew Ryan and Martin Frk also added singles for the Mooseheads, who lead the series 3-0.

Jurij Repe scored for Saint John, while Sebastien Auger stopped 40 shots in the loss.

Zachary Fucale made 20 saves for Halifax.

The Mooseheads played hard out of the gate, as MacAulay opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game.

Ryan made it 2-0 at 17:33 of the opening frame with his first of the post-season.

Frk pulled ahead in the playoff goal scoring race with his sixth of the post-season at 2:38 of the second period, and less than two minutes later, MacAulay added his second of the night, giving Halifax an imposing 4-0 lead.

Saint John got one back off the stick of Repe, capitalizing on the power play. Repe’s point blast beat a screened Fucale at 8:08, making it 4-1 on the Slovenian’s first of the playoffs.

Drouin finally found the goal column in the post-season, getting his first at 11:16 of the second period.

Shots in the second frame heavily favoured Halifax at 23-7.

Elsewhere in QMJHL playoff action, it was: Baie-Comeau 8 Sherbrooke 2; Gatineau 6 Rimouski 4; Quebec 6 Chicoutimi 3; Victoriaville 6 Moncton 5; P.E.I. 4 Val-d’Or 3 (OT); Drummondville 7 Rouyn-Noranda 6; and Acadie-Bathurst 5 Blainville-Boisbriand 4 (OT)

At Saint John, N.B., MacAulay took a five-minute major penalty for checking to the head early in the third, but the Mooseheads killed it off.

Drouin scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 5:41 of the third to put the game out of reach at 6-1.

Game 4 will be played at Harbour Station Wednesday night.

At Drummondville, Que., Matthew Boudens scored four times, including two on the power play 31 seconds apart in the first period, and a short-handed goal 55 seconds into the second period, to lead the Voltigeurs over Rouyn-Noranda.

The Huskies still lead the opening round playoff series 2-1.

At Victoriaville, Que., Philippe Maillet scored in overtime as the Tigres rallied with four goals in the third period to stun Moncton and tie their opening-round series 1-1.

Yannick Veilleux scored two power play goals, and Alex Saulnier also scored twice, once on a penalty shot for the Wildcats.

At Acadie-Bathurst, Que., Zach O'Brien scored the equalizer, and again at 5:32 into overtime, to lead the Titan over Blainville-Boisbrian.

The win gives Acadie-Bathurst a 2-1 lead in their opening round playoff series.

At Chicoutimi, Nick Sorensen had two goals and an assist as Quebec doubled the Sagueneens for a 2-1 lead in their playoff series.

At Gatineau, Que., Jonathan Bourcier and Emile Poirier each scored twice as the Olympiques pulled ahead 2-1 in their opening-round series against Rimouski.

At Sherbrooke, Que., Jeremy Gregoire had a hat trick and two assists as Baie-Comeau hammered the Phoenix to take a 3-0 lead in their opening-round series.
