OHL Roundup: McDowell scores winner as Otters come from behind to down Storm

Jimmy McDowell completed Erie's comeback on Saturday as the Otters downed the visiting Guelph Storm 5-4 in overtime in Ontario Hockey League action.

McDowell scored at 4:48 of extra time as Erie battled back from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits to end its regular season in a positive fashion.

Connor Brown scored twice for the Otters (19-40-9), including his second at 19:59 of the third period to force overtime, and Adam Pelech had a goal and an assist.

Brown finishes the season as Erie's leader in both goals and points with 28 goals and 69 points in 63 games.

Connor McDavid had four assists for the Otters while Dane Fox scored once.

McDavid's four assists gives the rookie 66 points in 63 games. However, Sarnia Sting freshman Nikolay Goldobin picked up a goal and an assist Saturday to finish the year with 68 points in 68 games, and top spot in rookie scoring.

Scott Kosmachuk led the Storm (39-23-6) with a goal and two assists and Tyler Bertuzzi, Patrick Watling and Zac Leslie each scored once.

Oscar Dansk made 25 saves for the win as Michael Nishi stopped 40-of-45 shots in defeat.

Erie went 3 for 4 on the power play while Guelph scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

The Otters will miss the playoffs for the second year in a row while the Storm have the fifth seed in the Western Conference and will face the Kitchener Rangers in the first round.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Mississauga 4, Ottawa 3; Belleville 5, Sudbury 2; Plymouth 4, Windsor 3; Sault Ste. Marie 6, Kitchener 4; London 3, Saginaw 2 (OT); Barrie 3, Niagara 2 and Owen Sound 4, Sarnia 2.

At Erie, Pa., Watling and Kosmachuk scored in the first period to give the Storm a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Bertuzzi made it 3-0 at 6:29 of the second, but Pelech put Erie on the board at 7:41 to make it 3-1 heading into the final period.

Brown scored at 8:13 of the third, however Leslie responded at 12:33 to restore Guelph's two goal lead.

Fox kept the game close with a goal at 15:41 and Brown forced overtime with just one second left in regulation.

At Belleville, Ont., Garrett Hooey scored twice and Scott Simmonds had a goal and an assist as the Bulls (44-16-8) beat Sudbury (29-27-11) for their fifth win in their last six contests.

At Plymouth, Mich., Mitchell Heard scored 1:42 into overtime and Stefan Noesen and Sebastian Uvira each had a goal and two assists as the Whalers (41-17-9) downed Windsor (26-32-9) for their seventh straight victory.

At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Michael Schumacher scored twice and set up one more while Andrew Fritsch and Jared McCann each had a goal and two assists as the Greyhounds (36-25-6) defeated Kitchener (39-20-9).

At Saginaw, Mich., Alex Broadhurst scored 1:14 into overtime and Anthony Stolarz made 22 saves as London (49-13-5) beat the Spirit (32-29-7) in a preview of a first-round matchup.

At Barrie, Ont., Andreas Athanasiou scored the game-winning goal early in the second period and Alex Fotinos turned away 30-of-32 shots as the Colts (44-20-4) handed Niagara (30-34-4) its fourth straight loss.

At Owen Sound, Ont., Gemel Smith, Chris Bigras and Steven Janes each had a goal and an assist as the Attack (44-18-6) doubled up Sarnia (35-28-5), which is winless in four outings.
