KENNEWICK, Wash. - Connor Rankin had two goals and an assist and Troy Trombley made 34 saves for his first Western Hockey League shutout as the Tri-City Americans blanked the Spokane Chiefs 6-0 on Saturday night.
"They earned it and we got what we deserved," Spokane coach Don Nachbaur said. "It was pretty obvious, one team prepared for a war and one team came looking for an easy game."
Parker Bowles and Marcus Messier each added a goal and an assist as the Americans (33-22-3) won for the second night in a row and jumped the Victoria Royals for fifth place in the Western Conference standings.
Brian Williams and Lucas Nickles also scored for Tri-City.
"Their nine forwards outskated our 12. They wanted it more than we did," added Nachbaur.
Eric Williams gave up four goals on 18 shots for the Chiefs (34-22-2) and was pulled after one period of action. Garret Hughson replaced Williams and stopped 19-of-21 shots in 40 minutes of play.
Tri-City went 1 for 7 on the power play while Spokane failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.
