WHL Roundup: Josh Nicholls leads Blades past Broncos for 5-4 shootout victory

Josh Nicholls forced overtime with a third-period goal then had the shootout winner as the Saskatoon Blades edged the Swift Current Broncos 5-4 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Shane McColgan, Matej Stransky and Duncan Siemens all scored for Saskatoon (32-21-3) in regulation. Goaltender Andrey Makarov made 31 saves and turned aside three skaters in the shootout to earn the win.

Graham Black led Swift Current (27-24-6) with two goals and two assists. Colby Cave scored while the Broncos were shorthanded and Chance Lund had a goal as well.

Eetu Laurikainen stopped 41 shots and denied McColgan and Stransky in the shootout.

Both teams went 0 for 4 on the power play.

Nicholls scored with 29 seconds remaining in the third period to force the extra time.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Moose Jaw 4 Prince Albert 1; Medicine Hat 4 Regina 3 and Calgary 6 Tri-City 2.

At Moose Jaw, Sask., Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Morgan Rielly and Justin Kirsch both scored twice as the Warriors (19-29-9) downed Prince Albert (31-21-5),

Tigers 4 Pats 3

At Regina, Hunter Shinkaruk had a goal and an assist to help Medicine Hat (28-26-3) edge the Pats (20-31-6).

Hitmen 6 Americans 2

At Kennewick, Wash., Calgary (37-16-4) scored four goals on eight shots in the second period en route to a victory over Tri-City (31-22-3).
