OHL Roundup: Subbans lead the Bulls over the Otters

Malcolm Subban stopped 38 of 39 shots and Jordan Subban had a goal and an assist as the Belleville Bulls downed the visiting Erie Otters 4-1 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.

Malcolm Subban improved to 20-9-3 on the season and now has a league-best 2.16 goals-against average and .932 save percentage. Jordan Subban has 10 goals and 36 points in 50 games, which moves him into the top-10 in OHL scoring for defencemen.

Tyler Graovac scored twice for the Bulls (29-14-6), who have won eight of their last 11 outings, and Alan Quine added a single goal.

Joseph Cramarossa and Brendan Gaunce each had two assists for Belleville.

Hayden Hodgson scored the lone goal for the Otters (16-29-8), who have dropped eight of their last nine games, and Devin Williams made 32 saves in defeat.

Belleville went 2 for 4 on the power play while Erie failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Oshawa 4, Niagara 2; Peterborough 3, Sault Ste. Marie 2; Plymouth 7, Owen Sound 3; Sudbury 3, Mississauga 2 (SO); Saginaw 5, Barrie 3 and Ottawa 8, Windsor 5.

At Belleville, Ont., Hodgson opened the scoring for the Otters at 10:25 of the first period, however, Graovac replied with two goals in 48 seconds to give Belleville a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Both clubs had 15 shots in the second period, but neither team could score.

Subban made it 3-1 at 14:36 of the third and Quine added a late goal to round out Belleville's scoring.

At Peterborough, Ont., Andrew D'Agostini made 40 saves and Nick Czinder scored the winning goal, and added an assist, as the Petes (18-29-7) edged Sault Ste. Marie (29-20-4), which lost in regulation for the first time in eight contests.

At Plymouth, Mich., Tom Wilson scored two goals and added two assists while Ryan Hartman had four assists as the Whalers (27-16-9) beat Owen Sound (33-16-4), moving them over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for first in the West Division.

At Sudbury, Ont., Charlie Dodero scored the shootout winner and Franky Palazzese stopped 28 of 30 shots as the Wolves (25-18-11) edged Mississauga (24-24-5) for their first win in three games.

At Saginaw, Mich., Eric Locke and Garret Ross each had a goal and three assists while Jake Paterson made 37 saves as the Spirit (26-21-6) downed Barrie (34-16-2) for their eighth win in their last 11 games.

At Ottawa, Sean Monahan scored three times and Joseph Blandisi, Brett Gustavsen and Brendan Bell each had a goal and two assists as the 67's (15-34-4) beat Windsor (22-24-7), which is now nine points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
