QMJHL Roundup: Russian duo lead the Wildcats over the Screaming Eagles

Dmitrij Jaskin scored once and set up three more as the Moncton Wildcats doubled up the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 6-3 on Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The 19-year-old Russian extended his point streak to six games and he has six goals and 18 points in the process. With 28 goals and 63 points in just 34 games played, Jaskin has moved into the top-5 in league scoring.

Ivan Barbashev, who's also native to Russia, scored two goals and set up one more for the Wildcats (27-16-1) while Phillip Danault had a goal and an assist.

After going 10 games without a goal, Barbashev has three goals and seven assists for a total of ten points in his last three outings.

Allain Saulnier and Lucas Batt each scored once and Jonathan Narbonne chipped in with two assists to round out Moncton's offence.

Bronson Beaton, Zachery Moody and Charles-Eric Legare scored for the Screaming Eagles (9-29-7), who are winless in their last nine games.

Cole Holowenko made 22 saves for the win as Alex Bureau picked up the loss after allowing five goals on 22 shots. David Honzik stopped 16-of-17 shots in 32 minutes of relief.

Moncton went 1 for 3 on the power play while Cape Breton failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Halifax 11, Quebec 2; Val-d'Or 4, Sherbrooke 1; Blainville-Boisbriand 5, Victoriaville 1; Baie-Comeau 3, P.E.I. 2; Shawinigan 4, Chicoutimi 3; Gatineau 2, Rouyn-Noranda 1 and Rimouski 5, Drummondville 1.

At Moncton, N.B., Barbashev opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the game and the Wildcats never let up as they cruised to a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Jaskin made it 2-0 at 3:13 and Batt, Danault and Barbashev all scored in the span of 1:23 to blow the game open.

Moody put the Screaming Eagles on the board at 7:44 of the second period, however Saulnier responded on the power play to make it 6-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Beaton and Legare tacked on late goals for Cape Breton in the third period to bring the game within three goals.

At Sherbrooke, Que., Philippe Trudeau stopped 29-of-30 shots and Loik Poudrier had a goal and an assist as Val-d'Or (23-19-3) downed the Phoenix (12-26-6) for the second time in three meetings this season.

At Victoriaville, Que., Christopher Clapperton scored twice and Etienne Marcoux stopped 25 shots as Blainville-Boisbriand (26-13-4) beat the Tigres (18-20-7), who lost for the first time in three games.

At Baie-Comeau, Que., Petr Straka and Valentin Zykov each had a goal and an assist as Baie-Comeau (30-11-4) edged P.E.I. (25-18-2) for its ninth win in its last 10 contests.

At Chicoutimi, Que., Felix-Antoine Bergeron scored the winning goal at 12:37 of the third period and Marvin Cupper turned away 34-of-37 shots as Shawinigan (10-28-5) slipped past the Sagueneens (22-20-4).

At Gatineau, Que., Robert Steeves made 19 saves and Alex Carrier's first goal of the season stood up as the winner as the Olympiques (19-22-3) beat Rouyn-Noranda (28-15-1).

At Rimouski, Que., Alexandre Lavoie scored once and set up three more and Philippe Desrosiers stopped 22 shots as the Oceanic (29-11-5) won their fourth game in a row by downing Drummondville (24-16-3).
