KENNEWICK, Wash. - Malte Stromwall scored the winning goal 43 seconds into overtime as the Tri-City Americans came from behind to defeat the visiting Spokane Chiefs 5-4 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.
The Americans (16-7-2), who trailed 4-3 in the final minute of regulation time, got a tying goal from Marcus Messier while skating with a sixth attacker to force extra time.
“We were 13 seconds away from a win,” said Spokane coach Don Nachbaur, who coached his 999th WHL game. “We made far too many mistakes for us to walk out of here feeling good about our game.”
Eric Comrie made 35 saves for his first career win over Spokane in six tries while Eric Williams turned aside 37 shots in a losing cause.
Both clubs went 0-for-2 on the power play.
