DraftKings daily fantasy value picks for Jan. 20

Each day during the 2015-16 season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.

Carl Soderberg, C, Colorado Avalanche

DraftKings price: $4,800

Most DFS owners probably don't realize Soderberg leads the Avalanche in scoring since Nov. 21 with 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 28 games, a span where Colorado has made up a ton of ground in the standings. The Avalanche is tied with the Vancouver Canucks for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference ahead of their home game against the Buffalo Sabres. It will be Ryan O'Reilly's return to the Mile High City, and the two-way forward will likely line up against the line of Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon and Alex Tanguay. That could take the focus off of Colorado's second line of Soderberg, Gabriel Landeskog ($6,400) and Blake Comeau. Soderberg also plays on the top power-play unit with forwards MacKinnon, Tanguay and Jarome Iginla against the Sabres, who have the third-worst road penalty kill in the NHL (74.6 percent). He's 10th in price among centers in DraftKings.

David Perron, W, Anaheim Ducks

DraftKings price: $4,100

Perron scored a goal and had three shots on goal in his Anaheim debut, which could set the tone for a shooting percentage correction in the second half of the season after he had four goals on 96 SOG in 43 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Though he played most of his debut with Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg on the Ducks' second line, he also saw time with Ryan Getzlaf and Chris Stewart in the third period against the Los Angeles Kings and scored his goal off an assist from Getzlaf. Perron, tied for 16th among wings in price for this three-game Wednesday, averages nearly three SOG per game over his past 10 and will return value in DraftKings if he has a goal or assist, which he has a great chance to do at home in a first or second-line role.

Mike Green, D, Detroit Red Wings

DraftKings price: $4,500

Green ranks 11th at his position in price and should see an uptick in minutes and fantasy production in the absence of Niklas Kronwall, who's sidelined because of a knee injury. Green, a 70-point scorer many moons ago, is capable of much more than his 17 points, 43 blocks and 69 SOG in 39 games this season (2.4 DraftKings points per contest). He should finally have the No. 1 power-play unit, which features Pavel Datsyuk, Gustav Nyquist and Henrik Zetterberg, to himself and get his offensive game back on track in the coming weeks. Green's opponent, the St. Louis Blues, went 3-1-0 on their recent homestand but allowed 11 goals. The Red Wings are 5-1-1 this month.

John Gibson, G, Anaheim Ducks

DraftKings price: $6,900

With Frederik Andersen (upper body) injured, Gibson is expected to start Wednesday against the reeling Minnesota Wild, who have lost four straight with three goals in that span. Though the Wild likely won't be blanked for the third straight game, they have 47 goals (T-3rd fewest in NHL) in 21 road games this season. On a three-game night where four of the six projected starters cost $7,600 or more in DraftKings, Gibson provides salary cap relief and a strong chance at the win bonus. Though Gibson has lost two straight in regulation, allowing five combined goals, his save percentage has been consistent at home (.923) and on the road (.924) and the Ducks will be desperate to finish their eight-game homestand (4-3-0) on a winning note. Gibson also has four shutouts in 17 starts.
