Top prospects Kyrou, Wells lead OHL past Russia

Top 2016 NHL Draft prospects Jordan Kyrou scored a goal, and goaltender Dylan Wells made 10 saves to help the Ontario Hockey League to a 2-1 win Monday against Russia in the fourth game of the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series, at WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario.

The CHL has won the first four games of the series. The Western Hockey League won its two games last week, and the OHL defeated Russia 3-0 on Nov. 12.

Spencer Watson, a Los Angeles Kings prospect, scored the game-winning goal. He scored two goals in the first game against Russia. Goaltender Michael McNiven (Montreal Canadiens) made 11 saves.

"Everyone was great tonight, goaltenders included," OHL coach Rocky Thompson told the CHL website. "It was a great effort, and there was a lot of talent out there."

Forward Kirill Pilipenko, a prospect for the 2016 draft, scored for Russia. Goalie Alexander Trushkov, also a 2016 draft prospect, made 36 saves.

Pilipenko's power-play goal at 7:27 of the first period gave Russia the lead but Kyrou, a B-rated player on NHL Central Scouting's September players to watch list, tied the game at 9:12 of the second. The 6-foot, 178-pound center got to the front of the net and banged in the rebound of a shot by defenseman Kyle Capobianco (Arizona Coyotes).

Watson scored the winner 1:50 later, one-timing a pass into the slot by Mitchell Marner (Toronto Maple Leafs).

Wells, who plays for Peterborough and is a B-rated player, made the lead stand up, including making seven saves in the third period.

The Canada-Russia Series concludes with two games between Russia and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Nov. 17 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Nov. 19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

All players participating in the games are eligible to play in the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, which starts Dec. 26 in Helsinki, Finland.
