Teams set All-Star record for goals in period

COLUMBUS -- Team Toews and Team Foligno combined to score four goals in the first 2:27 of the second period of the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Sunday.

Then a save was made.

After a relative defensive struggle in the first period, Team Toews and Team Foligno scored 11 goals on 34 shots in the second period, with Team Toews entering the third period with an 11-8 lead on the strength of a hat trick for John Tavares of the New York Islanders and two goals from Jakub Voracek of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 11 goals in the second period set an All-Star Game record for goals in one period.

Team Toews goalie Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks stopped a shot from Radim Vrbata of the Vancouver Canucks at 2:50 of the second period. The save came after Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild and Tyler Seguin of the Dallas Stars had already scored for Team Toews, and Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning had scored for Team Foligno.

At one point, after Tavares scored at 8:16 of the second, Team Toews had five goals on nine shots on Team Foligno goalie Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Team Foligno had two goals on six shots on Crawford. Combined, that's seven goals on 15 shots.

The fans in Columbus took to cheering Fleury every time he stopped the puck, including when he went into the corner to retrieve a dump-in.

Team Toews got single second-period goals from Suter, Seguin, Rick Nash of the New York Rangers, Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators and Voracek, plus two from Tavares.

Giroux and Nick Foligno of the Columbus Blue Jackets scored one goal and Steven Stamkos had two in the period for Team Foligno.

Fleury allowed seven goals on 16 shots and Crawford four goals on 18 shots before the second-period horn sounded, mercifully putting an end to their nights.

Team Toews forward Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins led both teams after two periods with four points, and six of his teammates had three points after two periods. Ryan Johansen of the Blue Jackets led Team Foligno with three points at the second intermission.

Johansen also provided some comic relief before the end of the period, jabbing at a rebound under Crawford's pad to set off a playful scrum.
