Fantasy Spin: Downie, Hartnell good for points, PIMs

This might be surprising, but there can be such a thing as having too much offense.

If you're in a Yahoo league, there's a good chance it's a head-to-head league. Whether you outscore your opponent by one goal or 20 goals, each counts the same: one point for winning that category. There are only a handful of players who are scorers and rack up penalty minutes.

More often than not, you can find a streaky scorer to add on waivers, and penalty minutes are often overlooked.

Let's take a look at some players you should target mainly for penalty minutes, but who likely can chip in with some points too.

- Steve Downie (48 percent owned, LW, RW) of the Pittsburgh Penguins is leading the NHL in penalty minutes by a wide margin; with 143, he has 50 more than Derek Dorsett (5 percent owned, RW) of the Vancouver Canucks and Cody McLeod (2 percent owned LW) of the Colorado Avalanche. Downie also has seven goals and 20 assists, and he has played on the Penguins power play. For a player who's owned in less than half of Yahoo leagues, he probably is your best bet if you're looking for a boost in PIMs.

- Brad Marchand (68 percent owned, LW) of the Boston Bruins was suspended two games for slew-footing New York Rangers forward Derick Brassard on Thursday. The game before that, Marchand racked up 14 penalty minutes in a 4-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has 62 penalty minutes to go along with 92 shots and 24 points in nearly 17 minutes of ice time per game.

- Scott Hartnell (69 percent owned, LW) of the Columbus Blue Jackets has more than 100 penalty minutes in nine of his 14 NHL seasons. He also took more than 150 shots in 11 of 12 seasons from 2001-14. True, the Blue Jackets forward has dealt with injuries this season, but he still has 59 penalty minutes to go with 26 points in 38 games.

- Antoine Roussel (22 percent owned, LW) of the Dallas Stars has 88 penalty minutes, 11 goals, 11 assists and 68 shots in 15:19 of ice time per game.

- Brandon Prust (2 percent owned, LW) of the Montreal Canadiens is another good option. He has 83 penalty minutes, and his nine major penalties are tied for first with Dorsett, McLeod and Jared Boll of the Blue Jackets (less than 1 percent owned, RW).

Others to consider: Tom Wilson, Washington Capitals (2 percent owned, RW, 77 PIM); Chris Kreider, New York Rangers (58 percent owned, LW, 69 PIM); Matt Martin, New York Islanders (6 percent owned, LW, 59 PIM); Ryan Reaves, St. Louis Blues (1 percent owned, RW, 73 PIM)
