Lightning's Drouin out 3-4 weeks with thumb fracture

The Tampa Bay Lightning confirmed reports that forward Jonathan Drouin will be out 3-4 weeks with a fracture in his right thumb.

The Lightning had held Drouin out of training camp activities over the weekend because of what the team said was an upper-body injury.

Drouin got bumped during drills Thursday and fell on his hand, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Drouin didn't think the injury was that bad originally, but told the Lightning about it Friday after their skate.

"Just a little collision and I fell on it, it wasn't a big hit or anything," Drouin said. "Just lost balance and fell on my hand."

Drouin, ranked No. 1 on the NHL.com Top 60 prospect ranking, is bidding to make his NHL debut this season. The Lightning made him the third pick of the 2013 NHL Draft but returned him to his junior team, the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

He had 29 goals and 108 points last season with Halifax, and 41 points in 16 QMJHL playoff games. He also starred for Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship with three goals and six assists in seven games.

The Lightning open their preseason schedule Tuesday against the Nashville Predators. Tampa Bay begins begin the regular season at home against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 9.
