PITTSBURGH -- Dylan Larkin of the United States Under-18 National Team Development Program scored the only goal of the second period to give Team Mark Johnson a 1-0 lead over Team Joe Mullen in the second CCM/USA Hockey All-American Top Prospects Game at Consol Energy Center.
Larkin, who was given an "A" rating on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary players to watch list from the United States Hockey League for the 2014 NHL Draft, connected 37 seconds into the period to give Team Johnson the lead.
Keegan Iverson of the Western Hockey League's Portland Winterhawks forced a turnover between the circles before controlling the puck and feeding Larkin in the slot. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound center made no mistake, putting the puck in the net past goalie Ed Minney of the United States Under-18 National Team Development Program.
Larkin is no stranger to scoring early. He netted a pair of goals for the NTDP in a 9-3 win against the Youngstown Phantoms in the season opener; the second straight season he's scored a goal on opening night. His goal against Youngstown 1:09 into the game was the first goal of USHL's 2013-14 regular season.
Team Johnson goalie Thatcher Demko (six saves) of Boston College was replaced midway through the second by Blake Weyrick of the USNTDP. Weyrick stood tall, stopping all 10 shots in his direction to keep his club in front. His best stop came with 7:22 left in the second when he denied Anders Bjork (USNTDP) with his left pad on a semi-breakaway.
Minney (16 saves) of the NTDP was replaced by Alex Nedeljkovic (Plymouth Whalers, Ontario Hockey League) midway through the period and made six saves.
