PITTSBURGH -- The goalies certainly stole the show in the opening period of a scoreless tie in the second annual CCM/USA Hockey All American Prospects Game on Thursday at Consol Energy Center.
Ed Minney of the United States Under-18 National Team Development Program was kept busy throughout in the opening 20 minutes, turning aside 16 shots for coach Joey Mullen. Minney was called upon to stop several attempts from in close, as well as a few rockets from the point.
At the other end of the ice, Thatcher Demko of Boston College stopped all five shots in his direction for coach Mark Johnson. The best chance to score came with 7:22 left when Team Mullen center Ryan Donato, sped into the offensive end and curled the net before attempting a wraparound that deflected off the post and into Demko's pad.
Defensively, Team Mullen received some solid play from Jack Dougherty and Ryan Collins of the USNTDP, and Josh Jacobs of the Indian Ice in the United States Hockey League. Team Johnson was headed along the blue line by Aaron Haydon of the Niagara Ice Dogs in the Ontario Hockey League and Nathan Billitier of the USNTDP.
