Report: Lupul out for Maple Leafs on Saturday

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul will not play against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

Lupul sustained an upper-body injury when hit during a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

Coach Randy Carlyle would not call the injury a concussion Friday.

“No that’s a bad word,” Carlyle told the newspaper. “We don’t use that word until we’re 100 percent sure on any of those situations medically. The term concussion, in today’s sporting world, you want to make sure you’re 100 percent sure before you start using that one.”

Lupul was injured when he was sandwiched between Flyers forwards Adam Hall and Jay Rosehill in the first period.

"Everybody saw the hit. He got squeezed out and he got dazed and didn’t feel very good," Carlyle said. “... They’ve just said he’s day to day. That’s what they’ve told me.”

Lupul has played in 10 games this season, sidelined by a broken forearm suffered Jan. 23 against the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as a two-game suspension.

Lupul had at least one point in each of the seven games he played since returning from his arm injury, with eight goals and six assists.

According to the report, Clarke MacArthur, who has missed four games with an upper-body injury, will return to the lineup in Lupul’s spot on a line with Nazem Kadri and Nikolai Kulemin.
