"What we believe is going on is that the process had begun to trade him, and the list of teams is very small and it’s Stanley Cup contenders," said the CBC's Elliotte Friedman on the Hot Stove segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday.
Meanwhile, both TSN's Darren Dreger, who is a hockey insider on the NHL Network as well, and Renaud Lavoie of RDS are reporting that four Stanley Cup contenders are on a list of teams Iginla has told the Flames he would waive the no-movement clause in his contract to join. According to both reporters, the Boston Bruins, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Los Angeles Kings, the defending Stanley Cup champion, comprise the list.
The NHL's Trade Deadline is April 3.
Iginla has played 1,217 regular season games for the Flames, totaling 524 goals and 1,094 points. This season he has eight goals and 21 points. Iginla has topped the 50-goal mark twice, most recently in the 2008-09 season. He has appeared in 54 Stanley Cup Playoff games, reaching the Final once, and scoring 28 goals in his playoff career.
Calgary, seven points out of a playoff spot with 19 games remaining, must climb past six teams to secure its first Stanley Cup Playoffs berth since 2009.
