In the tight race to represent Canada in goal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, Laurent Brossoit certainly made a strong statement in the second period.
The Calgary Flames prospect stopped all 12 shots Russia threw at him to help Team WHL keep Game 5 of the Subway Super Series scoreless through two periods.
Team Russia outshot Team WHL 12-10 in the period. Maxim Shalunov had the best scoring chance of the second, taking a long stretch pass and breaking in alone on Brossoit, but he denied the scoring chance just over six minutes into the period.
Valeri Nichushkin had another great chance in the final 75 seconds of the period, rushing the puck into the Team WHL zone, holding off a Team WHL defender, spinning and firing a backhander in net, but Brossoit calmly directed the shot into the corner.
Team WHL's best chance came just before Nichushkin's opportunity, when 2013 NHL Draft prospect Hunter Shinkaruk came close to finishing off a nice give-and-go play.
Back with more after the third period.
