• Captained Team Finland to a bronze medal 5-4 win over Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships in Fargo, North Dakota – he had five assists (0-5-5) and a plus-six rating in six games.

• Vatanen got his start in hockey at the age of five in his hometown youth league and he patterns his game after Finnish defenseman Petteri Nummelin because of his offensive side and good shot from the point.

• His most memorable hockey moment was playing in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge – “I got the opportunity to feel how it is to play in Canada in front of a bigger crowd”.
