• Began his OHL career with the defending Memorial Cup champions Windsor Spitfires in 2009-10, but was traded to the Bellville Bulls mid-way through the season. In his first full season with the Bulls he recorded 34 points (19-15--34) in 67 games in 2010-11.
• A Windsor minor hockey product, he won gold for team Canada at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament
• Playing the guitar is his hidden talent and his childhood hockey hero was Jason Spezza because he used to watch him play for the Windsor Spitfires.

You forget how good [Nieuwendyk] was. You hear the points and stuff and you almost forget until they kind of walk you through his career, and that was really cool for me. I might have felt it a little more than some of the other guys because he was one of my favorites growing up, but that was very cool and I'm honored to have been a part of it.
