Why should you go No. 1?

TORONTO -- Which player will be picked first at the 2012 NHL Draft? Right now, the only team that can answer that question is the Edmonton Oilers, and they're not quite ready to make that announcement yet.

There's a pretty wide field to select from, and NHL.com took the time to ask a few of the candidates -- Sarnia's Nail Yakupov and Alex Galchenyuk, Everett's Ryan Murray, Quebec's Mikhail Grigorenko and Leksand's Filip Forsberg -- why they should be the first player to walk on the stage at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on June 22.

We also asked Belleville's Malcolm Subban why he should be the first goaltender drafted.

Yakupov: "I don't know why. I think it’s a question not for me."

Murray: "I think that I work hard and do whatever I can to help my team win every night. I think I'm a consistent player. I think that I can play at both ends of the ice, offensively and defensively. I just try to work hard, lead by example, every single night."

Grigorenko: "I think I have a lot of talent. I can be a lot better than I am right now. I can play two-way [game]. I can play offensively and defensively good."

Galchenyuk: "I think as a player I'm really competitive and I'm a winner and I want to bring that to every team. I have that balance of skill and toughness. I think I can play a skill game, I feel like I can play a tough game. I think I'm a competitor and a winner."

Forsberg: "I think I have skills that I really don't think anyone in this draft has. I'm a big-size player and I'm a very skilled player who can always try to be a threat to the opponents. If I can put these tools together, I'd be a very good NHL player. They will also have a good person not just on the ice but also off the ice. That's very important, too."

Subban: "I should be the first goaltender drafted because I think I'm mentally ready for it. I think obviously, no disrespect to those guys, they're great goaltenders, I watched them -- especially [Andrei] Vasilevski at World Juniors -- but I feel like I have an edge over them with my mental ability and my athleticism."
