PHILADELPHIA -- New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic won't play Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers (1 p.m. ET; MSG+, CSN-PH) because of a lower-body injury.
Hamonic didn't practice Friday because of what the Islanders called a maintenance day.
"Just a lower body right now, still day-to-day," Islanders (22-14-5) coach Jack Capuano said. "Don't know how long he's going to be out. ... Other opportunity for guys to step up."
Scott Mayfield enters the lineup in Hamonic's absence. Mayfield was recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Friday. Capuano said he'll play with Adam Pelech, reuniting their AHL pairing.
"Losing Travis, another right-hand shot defenseman, just makes sense we give those two guys an opportunity," Capuano said. "Thought they played really well in training camp. Talking to [Bridgeport coach Brent Thompson and assistant coach Eric Boguniecki], they thought they'd played really well. They were using them as a top defense pairing."
Capuano said he would use the same 12 forwards as he did in the Islanders' 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday.
"Pretty happy with the last game we played," he said. "Obviously we've got to score more than one goal. Thought our penalty kill, power play were good. When we had our chances I thought their goalie really stood tall."
The Flyers (17-15-7) will be without their best young defenseman, Shayne Gostisbehere, because of a lower-body injury sustained during a 4-3 overtime win Thursday against the Minnesota Wild. He is considered day-to-day, and coach Dave Hakstol told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Gostisbehere could play Wednesday against the Boston Bruins.
Here are the projected lineups:
ISLANDERS
Anders Lee - John Tavares - Josh Bailey
Nikolay Kulemin - Frans Nielsen - Kyle Okposo
Brock Nelson - Mikhail Grabovski - Ryan Strome
Matt Martin - Casey Cizikas - Cal Clutterbuck
Injured: Eric Boulton (upper body), Jean-Francois Berube (lower body), Johnny Boychuk (upper body), Travis Hamonic (lower body)
Scratched: Marek Zidlicky, Steve Bernier
FLYERS
Jakub Voracek - Claude Giroux - Wayne Simmonds
Michael Raffl - Sean Couturier - Brayden Schenn
Chris VandeVelde - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - Ryan White
Matt Read - Scott Laughton - R.J. Umberger
Michael Del Zotto - Radko Gudas
Evgeny Medvedev - Brandon Manning
Injured: Shayne Gostisbehere (lower body)
Scratched: Jordan Weal
Status report: Capuano said he likely would start the game with Leddy on the right side but wasn't sure if it would last that way the whole game. "Probably put [Leddy] on the right to start and see how it goes," he said. "Guys have to figure it out pretty quickly there. They practice there during the week, get their reps there. But it's a little different in the game." ... Weal, acquired Wednesday from the Los Angeles Kings, will not play. Hakstol said he wants Weal to get some more practice time in before putting him in the lineup.
Who's hot: Leddy has one goal and five assists in his past six games. ... Schenn has two goals and four assists during a three-game point streak.
