RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Philadelphia Flyers will be without defenseman Mark Streit and forward R.J. Umberger when they face the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; CSN-PH, FS-CR).
Streit will have surgery Tuesday to repair a pubic plate detachment and will miss six weeks, Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Saturday. He was placed on long-term injured reserve. Umberger was placed on injured reserve because of a lower-body injury.
The 37-year-old Streit is second on the Flyers with nine points and with 22:45 of ice time per game. Prior to this injury he had missed one game in three seasons with the Flyers.
"He's a big factor for us in terms of his leadership," Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol said. "He's a very quiet leader but extremely well respected in our room. Just the consummate professional who every day does the right thing. It leaves a gap that others have to fill and it's an opportunity for others to step into as well."
The Flyers (5-8-3) recalled forward Taylor Leier and defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League. Both are expected to play against the Hurricanes.
Leier has five goals and nine points in 14 AHL games. Gostisbehere, who played two games for the Flyers last season, is tied for third among AHL defensemen with 10 points in 14 games.
"Taylor Leier is going to be playing his first [NHL] game so he will probably have some nervous energy. But he's a real hard-working player," Hakstol said. "I don't want to paint [Gostisbehere] as a replacement for Mark Streit because that's not fair. We just want him to come in and play sound, two-way hockey and add a little offensively because that's what he does."
The Flyers activated center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare from injured reserve; he had missed the past seven games because of a lower-body injury.
The Hurricanes (6-9-1) who have gone 1-3-1 in November, would like to get several of their forwards more involved in the offense; their forwards have combined for 24 goals in 16 games.
"It's just getting a bounce here or there. That's how you get out of those slumps," said Nathan Gerbe, who has one goal in 16 games. "I put pressure on myself to score all the time, but you keep working and keep doing the same things every day."
