Each day during the 2015-16 season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.
Players accumulate points in DraftKings for each goal (3 points), assist (2), shot on goal (0.5), blocked shot (0.5) and shootout goal (0.2). Bonuses are given for shorthanded points (1) and hat tricks (1.5). Goalies accumulate points for each win (3) and save (0.2), and lose a point for each goal allowed. Goalie bonuses are given for a shutout (2) where the goalie completes the entire game with no goals allowed in regulation (and overtime, if applicable). Shootout goals will not prevent a shutout, and goalies will receive points for any goals or assists they score in a game. Penalty minutes, hits, plus-minus and PP points DO NOT count in DraftKings. DraftKings lineups must include nine players (2 C, 3 W, 2 D, 1 G, 1 FLEX) and fit within the $50,000 salary cap.
David Desharnais, C, Montreal Canadiens
DraftKings price: $4,100
Wednesday is a two-game night, so DraftKings owners can grab a fantasy stalwart like Sidney Crosby ($7,700) of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are the Canadiens' opponent, and supplement their center spot with the red-hot and affordable Desharnais. The third-line center will try for a three-game goal streak as Montreal visits Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, Sportsnet). He has been tearing it up recently with three goals, four assists, five blocked shots and eight shots on goal in the past five games.
Teddy Purcell, W, Edmonton Oilers
DraftKings price: $3,400
Given the shallow pool of players to choose from, many DraftKings contests will be decided by inexpensive and typically low-performing players scoring a surprise goal or racking up the fantasy points with a few extra shots on goal. Purcell, a third-line forward, can be a difference maker since it's likely he will not be selected by many owners when Edmonton visits the Anaheim Ducks. Purcell has done well against Anaheim in his career with two goals, seven assists and 15 shots on goal in 12 games.
Sami Vatanen, D, Anaheim Ducks
DraftKings price: $5,200
Any defenseman that plays top-unit power-play minutes is worth a look in DraftKings contests and Vatanen should be a fine choice when the Ducks host the Oilers. Edmonton has been below average on the penalty kill this season at 79.2 percent, so Vatanen is likely to have increased opportunity to capitalize with a goal or assist. The Finnish defenseman will try to build off a great performance in his previous game as he totaled a goal, assist, two blocked shots and four shots on goal in a 4-3 loss against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday.
Frederik Andersen, G, Anaheim Ducks
DraftKings price $6,900
The Ducks are 4-0-1 in their past five games and are finally starting to find their scoring touch with an average of 3.4 goals per game over that span. But owners should not expect a low-scoring game against the Oilers since, despite being 2-6-0 in the past eight games, Edmonton is averaging 3.0 goals per game. Andersen has been amazing in four career starts against the Oilers, going 4-0-0 with 94 saves on 100 shots and a 1.50 goals-against average.
