WHL wins second game of Canada-Russia Series

Collin Shirley, a prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft, assisted on the game-tying goal to help the Western Hockey League beat Russia 4-2 on Tuesday in the second game of the 2015 Canada-Russia Series, at Sandman Centre in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The WHL swept its two games against Russia; the WHL won 7-3 on Monday at Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia. Shirley had one goal and three assists in that game.

Jayce Hawryluk (Florida Panthers) had the game-winning goal and an assist Tuesday. Jansen Harkins (Winnipeg Jets), Deven Sideroff (Anaheim Ducks) and Brett Pollock (Dallas Stars) also scored for the WHL. Goalie Adin Hill (Arizona Coyotes) made 18 saves.

Yegor Yakovlev, a 2016 draft prospect, and Sergey Zborovskiy (New York Rangers) scored for Russia. Goaltender Maxim Tretyak, also a 2016 draft prospect, made 35 saves.

Yakovlev's goal at 10:38 of the second period gave Russia a 2-1 lead but Shirley helped set up Sideroff's goal at 11:19 to tie the game. Shirley, who plays for Kamloops, got the puck to linemate Mathew Barzal (New York Islanders). Barzal got the puck to Sideroff in the slot and he beat Tretyak.

With 3:13 left in the third period Hawryluk intercepted a Russia pass at the attacking blue line, broke in on Tretyak and scored the go-ahead goal. Pollock added an empty-net goal with 17 seconds remaining.

The Ontario Hockey League gets its two games against Russia next, starting Thursday in Owen Sound, Ontario.

All players participating in the games are eligible to play in the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, which starts Dec. 26 in Helsinki, Finland.
