DETROIT -- The present and the past of the NHL will collide when the Detroit Red Wings play the Washington Capitals at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, FS-D, CSN+).
Washington's Alex Ovechkin comes into the game with 483 goals, which ties him with his idol, Hockey Hall of Fame member Sergei Fedorov, for the most NHL goals by a Russian-born player.
Fedorov played his first 13 seasons with Detroit and his final two as Ovechkin's teammate in Washington. Ovechkin had an assist on Fedorov's final NHL goal.
There will be a pregame ceremony Tuesday honoring Fedorov.
"Obviously it's going to a special moment if it's going to happen," Ovechkin said of breaking Fedorov's record. "But you never know when it's going to happen and how it's going to happen. Obviously for him it's a huge moment right now. He's just going to enjoy the game. And if it happens, probably he's not going to be happy."
Washington coach Barry Trotz said he doesn't think Ovechkin is feeling any pressure to score Tuesday.
"I think he looks at it as a good challenge,” Trotz said.
Said Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg, "It's pretty impressive. Hopefully he can wait a few games."
It also will be Red Wings defenseman Mike Green's first game against the Capitals since signing a three-year, $18 million with the Red Wings on July 1. He played the first 10 seasons of his NHL career with the Capitals.
During their time as Capitals teammates, Green and Ovechkin became close. Ovechkin jokingly said he'd try to slash Green's stick, an Easton model that was discontinued about 10 years ago.
Green replied, "If he can catch me."
It will be Green's second game back after missing six because of a shoulder injury.
