At the Rink: Avalanche at Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- In an attempt to jumpstart the offense, the Anaheim Ducks will insert some new faces into the lineup Friday against the Colorado Avalanche.

Coach Bruce Boudreau will scratch forwards Shawn Horcoff and Mike Santorelli and instead play Chris Wagner and Tim Jackman. The lines have also been mixed up as Patrick Maroon will play with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, reuniting the successful top line from the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We haven't won a game," Boudreau said. "And there's changes that need to be made when you don't win."

Jackman will draw in for the first time this season and Boudreau said the decision was based on his ability to bring energy to the game. The veteran fourth-liner said he wants to generate continual momentum and come hard on the forecheck.

"You have a good shift and guys get excited about it and the next guys come on and want to do the same thing and do better," Jackman said. "That's what we've got to try to do tonight, and it goes the other way too. If the guys ahead of you have a tough shift, you want to pick them up just like they pick you up when you make mistakes."

The Ducks (0-2-1) stayed off the ice Thursday, electing to instead work on the mental parts of the game. They were back on the ice for the morning skate Friday.

"We said, 'Listen, let's stay off the ice, think about it, come back on Friday and have a better morning skate,'" Boudreau said. "Start preparing better when you wake up the day of a game rather than waiting to react to what (the other team is) doing."

While the Ducks are putting less emphasis on practices and more on the morning skate, the Avalanche (1-2-0) are opting to go the opposite route. Coach Patrick Roy has eliminated the morning skate and the Avalanche did not go to the rink Friday morning. They are scheduled to practice Saturday, ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Kings.

Reto Berra will make his first start of the season after relieving Semyon Varlamov in a 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. Berra saved all five shots he faced.

Defenseman Francois Beauchemin will return to Anaheim for the first time since he opted to become a free agent and signed with Colorado on July 1. The defenseman, an alternate captain last season, played parts of nine seasons with the Ducks still holds the title as the second-highest scoring defenseman in club history.

The Ducks will unveil their new third jersey Friday.

Who's hot: Beauchemin has five assists and has combined with defense partner Johnson for eight points. Beauchemin's five points is the most in franchise history by a defenseman in the first two games of the season (Kerry Huffman of the Quebec Nordiques had six in 1992-93). … Landeskog is off to his best career start with four goals and two assists.
