Flames' Colborne week-to-week with broken thumb

Calgary Flames forward Joe Colborne is week-to-week with a broken thumb, the team announced Friday.

Colborne was injured in the second period of the Flames' 3-1 preseason loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday and didn't return. He was hit by an Andrew Ladd shot.

"I tried to reach out and get my stick in the way and it just came off and caught me right on the thumb, where there's no padding," Colborne told the Flames website. "It is what it is, I guess."

The hope is a few weeks of rest will allow the thumb to heal.

"We're having the specialist out in Vancouver look at it right now," Colborne said. "It will be a few weeks for sure but we're hoping to avoid surgery right now. It's looking good for that. We'll decide that soon."

Colborne, 25, had eight goals and 28 points in 64 regular-season games last season. He had one goal and three points in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The 16th pick in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, Colborne has 18 goals and 56 points over the past two seasons with Calgary after playing 16 NHL games over parts of three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
