Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser sustained an injury to his lower left leg late in the third period of a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
DeKeyser wore an immobilizing boot on his left foot Thursday and walked on crutches as he made his way to the team bus in downtown Pittsburgh, according to the Red Wings website, which said he had further testing and an MRI after returning to Detroit.
The Red Wings said DeKeyser was injured on an awkward hit while killing a penalty but finished his shift and played one more before the Red Wings completed a 7-2 victory. He finished with 21:17 of ice time on a Red Wings-high 29 shifts.
The Red Wings said there is no timetable for DeKeyser’s return. He has one assist and a plus-2 rating in three preseason games.
Detroit opens the regular season Oct. 9 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Coach Jeff Blashill has planned to play DeKeyser with Mike Green, who has missed the past four preseason games with a groin injury but is expected to return Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
