Islanders' Halak, Hickey, Bernier out with injuries

New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak, defenseman Thomas Hickey and right wing Steve Bernier will miss some time because of injuries.

Halak is day-to-day because of an upper-body injury, Hickey will miss four weeks because of an upper-body injury, and Bernier is expected to miss 1-2 weeks because of a lower-body injury.

Halak was 38-17-4 with a 2.43 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 59 games, the most he's played in an NHL season.

Hickey had two goals and 22 points in 81 games while averaging 18:55 of ice time.

Islanders coach Jack Capuano told Newsday on Tuesday that he hasn't determined who would replace Hickey on the roster. Brian Strait had seven points in 52 games last season and was expected to be the seventh defenseman this season. But Ryan Pulock, the 15th pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, also is an option.

Bernier signed a one-year contract worth a reported $750,000 on Sept. 17 after spending the previous four seasons with the New Jersey Devils. Last season he had 16 goals and 32 points in 67 games.
