TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- New York Rangers defense prospect Brady Skjei sustained an upper-body injury against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Traverse City Tournament on Monday but is expected to be OK.
Skjei, who was a first-round pick (No. 28) in the 2012 NHL Draft, was removed from the game at Centre Ice Arena as a precaution after sustaining the injury in the first period of the Rangers' 4-0 win.
Rangers prospect coach Ken Gernander, who coaches Hartford in the American Hockey League, said Skjei is probable for New York's final game of the tournament Tuesday.
"It was a minor little ding, and we're just going to rest him [Monday]," Gernander said. "He should be OK Tuesday. He's being evaluated now. We want him to be ready for training camp, so we're just erring on the side of caution."
Goaltender Brandon Halverson, a Traverse City native, sustained an unspecified injury during USA Hockey's evaluation camp for the 2016 World Junior Championship in Lake Placid, N.Y., in August and will not play in Traverse City. Halverson, who New York selected in the second round (No. 59) of the 2014 draft, accompanied the Rangers to the tournament because he lives in town, but he has not dressed for any of the games.
"He's day-to-day," Gernander said. "He's been on the ice with [goaltending coach] Benoit Allaire but won't play in this tournament."
