Kapanen surprised by trade to Maple Leafs: report

Toronto Maple Leafs forward prospect Kasperi Kapanen admits he was surprised to be traded by the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the Phil Kessel trade.

"I think it was a shock for everybody," he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sunday. "I didn't expect it."

Kapanen, the son of longtime NHL forward Sami Kapanen, said he was with friends in his native Finland when he found out he'd been traded.

"I was just with my buddies, and I saw that my Twitter was exploding," he said. "I read some of the tweets and didn't really think too much about it, but then my agent called me, so I thought something was going on."

The Penguins took Kapanen with the 22nd pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. He played most of last season in Finland, but joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League in April and had a goal and an assist in four regular-season games. He had three goals and two assists in seven Calder Cup playoff games.

The 19-year-old, who is likely to begin the season with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, said he has no hard feelings toward the Penguins.

"I don't hate them, or anything like that," he said. "Hopefully, I'll just be a better player now. Their loss."
