Sharks' Roy proud to be first pick of second round

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Sherbrooke Phoenix defenseman Jeremy Roy was flattered to be the first pick of the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft on Saturday.

Knowing the San Jose Sharks traded up to get him made it an even better feeling.

"It's definitely great," Roy said. "Having a team moving up for you, it shows they really want you. It's a great feeling."

The Sharks acquired the 31st pick from the Colorado Avalanche for No. 39 in the 2015 draft, a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-round pick in 2017, both previously belonging to the Avalanche.

Roy, a 6-foot, 188-pound right-shot defender, had five goals and 43 points in 48 games. He was No. 23 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters.

"Jeremy is a very good puck-moving defenseman," Central Scouting's Troy Dumville said. "He skates well and plays a physical game. He's a right shot that often played left side. He can quarterback the power play and he's highly skilled with the puck."

Roy said he was a bit surprised the Sharks were the team that selected him.

"I didn't talk to them a lot. ... And it wasn't my best interview," he said. "Kind of a surprise but I'm really proud to be a San Jose Shark right now."

And even though he didn't go in the first round like he thought was possible, he was just as happy to be the first pick on the second day.

"It's always the little kid's dream to be drafted in the first round," he said. "But this morning was a new day, and I'm as proud now as I would have been yesterday."
