Lightning defenseman Coburn likely was ill

NEW YORK -- Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Braydon Coburn played 5:43 in the first period of a 2-0 win against the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final at Madison Square Garden on Sunday then didn't play the rest of the game.

Coburn didn't appear to be injured, and afterward, Lighting coach Jon Cooper revealed the stomach-churning details.

"There was, yeah … don't walk on our bench. That's what I'm going to say," Cooper said.

"I don't know what TV cameras picked stuff up. We had issues on the bench, so I've got to find more of what's going on."

Based on Cooper's comments, Coburn likely threw up on the bench, which is why he didn't return.

Tampa Bay dressed seven defensemen, so they did not have to play the remainder of the game shorthanded in Coburn's absence.

The Lightning took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series and would advance to the Stanley Cup Final with a win in Game 6 at Amalie Arena on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).
