NEW YORK -- It's been an up-and-down season for Washington Capitals forward Curtis Glencross, and that continued in a 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

Glencross, who hadn't scored in eight playoff games and was a healthy scratch for Games 4 and 5 of the first round against the New York Islanders, scored in the third period and appeared to be the hero until the Rangers tied the game late and eventually won it after his mistake.

Washington leads the best-of-7 series 3-2 with Game 6 on Sunday in Washington (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

"[Defenseman Matt] Niskanen dove and whacked it, and I was kind of surprised [I] was left alone and had a breakaway and [Henrik Lundqvist] made the first good save," Glencross said about his goal at 10:54 of the third. "I stopped at the net and was lucky enough to get the rebound."

Glencross, who was traded to the Capitals from the Calgary Flames on March 2, had trouble adjusting to his new team, with four goals in 18 regular-season games.

The goal Friday was his first point of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"It's disappointing," Glencross said. "That's hockey unfortunately. We had a lead with five minutes left and we have to seal it up and it comes into overtime and it's a game of mistakes and they got [the win]."

Chris Kreider scored for the Rangers to tie it with 1:41 left in the third period, and Ryan McDonagh scored 9:37 into overtime, a goal that was scored seconds after Glencross turned over the puck in the neutral zone.

"It's disappointing, obviously," Glencross said. "They picked off a hard pass across the ice out of the air and came back, and unfortunately they put it in the back of the net.

"[Brooks Laich] was all alone wide. If I make a pass like that, he's gone in [alone] pretty much."

Washington is 3-9 when trying to clinch a series since the 2010 playoffs, and 3-4 all-time when leading 3-2 in a series after losing a Game 5.

"It's too bad it wasn't enough to hold up," Glencross said. "We're going to be good next game. We're going to come out and short-term memory hopefully and come back on Sunday and take the series."
